If you think you need an ambulance or your injury or illness is critical or life threatening, call triple zero (000) for an ambulance immediately.

I need health advice — do you have a helpline?

Yes, we have. Call the helpline free* on 1800 022 222 (known as NURSE-ON-CALL in Victoria). Our registered nurses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide advice when you're not sure what to do — whether you should see a local GP, manage the condition at home, or go to an emergency department.

The doctor's surgery is closed — can I speak to a GP after-hours?

If your GP is closed and you need health advice after-hours, call the helpline free* on 1800 022 222 for information on where to go to get help in your area.

Our registered nurses will talk to you about your symptoms. They may offer you a call back or a video call from a GP.

I need help to access the helpline

  • If you have a hearing or speech impairment, call the National Relay Service on 1800 555 677 and ask to be transferred to healthdirect.
  • If English is not your main language and you need an interpreter, call TIS National on 131 450 and ask to be transferred to healthdirect.

Where's my nearest health service?

The healthdirect Service Finder gives you quick and easy access to Australia's most comprehensive directory of health services and providers. Search results are based on location, allowing you to find the closest doctor, pharmacy, physio, etc.

If your GP clinic is closed, you can use the Service Finder to locate an alternative GP.
