Diagnosis of bulimia nervosa

2-minute read

Bulimia nervosa, often referred to as just bulimia, is an eating disorder characterised by binge eating followed by purging or vomiting.

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that can cause binge eating.

What is bulimia nervosa?

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that can cause binge eating.

It is similar to binge-eating disorder (BED) but with bulimia nervosa, a person will compensate for overeating by vomiting or overexercising after binge eating.

If you, or someone you know, has problems with bulimia nervosa or binge eating, it is important to seek medical help. The condition can have serious health consequences if left untreated.

A doctor can do a mental health assessment including collecting a history of bingeing and purging episodes, mood and psychological issues. The doctor will also need to do a physical examination, blood tests or other investigations in case of any medical complications.

Many people with bulimia nervosa find it difficult to seek help. They may feel guilty or ashamed of their behaviour. But there is often a sense of relief after getting a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa because it can lead to successful treatment and recovery.
