NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth (Stillbirth CRE)

The Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth (Stillbirth CRE) has been established to address the tragedy of stillbirth in Australia through a cohesive national program of research and implementation. The Stillbirth CRE is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and functions as a network made up of individuals and partner organisations sharing a common vision.

Vision and mission

Stillbirth CRE's vision is to reduce the devastating impact of stillbirth for women, families and the wider community in Australia and across the globe by improving care to reduce the number of stillborn babies and to reduce the impact of this loss.

How Stillbirth CRE can help

The Stillbirth CRE research program comprises four areas and incorporates cross-cutting themes of diversity and equity:

  1. Data to drive change. They draw on existing and novel data systems to gain comprehensive, timely data to drive practice and policy change.
  2. Novel approaches to prevention. They identify novel solutions through discovery science and carry out large-scale trials in stillbirth prevention.
  3. Implementing prevention strategies. They provide scalable interventions to enable health services to reduce the gap between what is known and what is done in maternity care to reduce stillbirth.
  4. Care Around Stillbirth and Neonatal Death (CASaND). They generate the evidence-base for implementation of effective parent-centred care following stillbirth or neonatal death in hospital and community setting throughout Australia.
