What this medicine is for

ADULT: Videx is indicated for use in adult patients in the treatment of HIV infection, alone or in combination with other anti-retroviral drugs (see Clinical Trials section of PHARMACOLOGY). PAEDIATRIC: Videx is indicated for the treatment of adult and paediatric patients (over 56 months of age) with advanced HIV infection who are intolerant of zidovudine therapy or who have demonstrated significant clinical or immunological deterioration during zidovudine therapy or for whom zidovudine is contraindicated. This indication is based on increases in CD4 counts observed in patients during therapy with Videx. Increases in CD4 counts are considered markers of antiviral activity, and have been linked to clinical benefit in previous AIDS therapy trials. Because initial therapy with zidovudine has been shown to prolong survival and decrease the incidence of opportunistic infections in patients with advanced HIV disease, and because data are not yet available on the effect of initial therapy with Videx, zidovudine should be considered for initial therapy of advanced HIV disease, unless contraindicated. INDICATIONS AS OF 3RD MARCH 1997 - Videx is indicated for use in adults and paediatric patients in the treatment of HIV infection, alone or in combination with other antiretroviral drugs.
