Weddings, funerals and worship - Northern Territory

Updated on 16 January 2022, at 16:50 AET

Visit Lockdowns and outbreaks – Northern Territory to learn if there are any lockdowns or lockouts in the Northern Territory, and the accompanying rules.

Mandatory face mask rules apply across the Northern Territory, see Face masks — Northern Territory in the Restriction Checker.

Restrictions outside of a lockdown or lockout area

Outside of a lockdown or lockout area, there’s no limit on the number of people who can attend a wedding or funeral in the Northern Territory. For details on checklist and Safety Plan requirements, see ‘Gatherings and work - Northern Territory’ in the Restriction Checker.

Places used for religious worship are open.

Participants at weddings, funerals and religious ceremonies must practise physical distancing and proper hygiene measures, including:

  • using hand sanitiser if hand-washing facilities aren't available
  • keeping 1.5 metres from people they don’t live with
  • avoiding crowding together at the beginning or end of events

Venues should arrange seating so different groups aren’t seated face-to-face — where possible.

Proof of vaccination is required to enter:

  • pubs and clubs
  • casinos
  • restaurants
  • cinemas and theatres
  • ticketed events for more than 500 people in urban centres or more than 100 people in non-urban centres

If you’re in a lockdown area or you’re not fully vaccinated in a lockout area, there are limited reasons to leave your home. For details, visit Lockdowns and outbreaks - Northern Territory in healthdirect’s Restriction Checker.

The NT now requires businesses, organisations and venues — including places of worship, restaurants and function centres — to collect customer contact details as part of the COVID-Safe Check-In system. Businesses must also review their COVID-19 Safety Plan every 6 months and appoint a COVID Safety Supervisor.

For more information on restrictions in the Northern Territory, visit coronavirus.nt.gov.au.
