Sport and recreation – Northern Territory

Updated on 3 December 2020, at 13:40 AET

You can do sports activities in the Northern Territory, including:

  • indoor and outdoor exercise such as bootcamp and CrossFit
  • indoor fitness classes such as yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Barre and dance
  • using outdoor gym equipment
  • swimming at public swimming pools
  • using skate parks and public playgrounds
  • training activities for sporting clubs and teams

You can also participate in team and contact sports, such as football or basketball.

You can attend an arena, stadium or other sporting facility. The venue will seat spectators in an approved seating configuration.

Participants and spectators should practise good hygiene and physical distancing, including:

  • keeping at least 1.5 metres from other people
  • keeping face-to-face contact to less than 15 minutes, when the 1.5 metres distancing rule isn’t possible
  • keeping indoor activities to less than 2 hours

Some national parks are open but it’s best to plan ahead.

The NT now requires businesses, organisations and venues to collect customer contact details as part of the COVID-Safe Check-In system. Businesses must also review their COVID-19 Safety Plan every 6 months and appoint a COVID Safety Supervisor.

The Territory Check In app makes it easier to collect customer contact details. The data is stored securely by NT Health for quick contact tracing if needed. The app is available for download from the Google Play and Apple App stores.

Venues affected by this include:

  • public swimming pools and bathhouses
  • gyms
  • indoor community centres and community organisations
  • yoga, Pilates, massage and wellness services
  • entertainment venues including ten-pin bowling centres
  • indoor play centres and trampoline centres
  • schools and universities
