Service description:
John Cade Unit 1 is an acute adult psychiatric inpatient unit situated at The Royal Melbourne Hospital in the John Cade Building Level 1. It can accommodate 25 patients at any one time. Within the unit, 21 beds are allocated for low dependency admissions and 4 beds are allocated for high dependency admissions.

Patient allocation to the ward is dependent on residential address. 

A person is admitted into the unit if there is no other care appropriate of a less restrictive nature. 

The John Cade Unit 1 is staffed with a multidisciplinary team to ensure all aspects of care are attended to comprehensively. 

The unit has another four Psychiatric Assessment & Planning Unit (PAPU) beds co located within the unit that provides access to Psychiatric treatment for patients presenting to the Royal Melbourne Emergency Department.

Aims:
To provide intensive psychiatric assessment and treatment to clients of Inner West Melbourne in a safe setting.

Referrals:
Referrals to the Inpatient Unit are only made via the Inner West Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (CAT Team)

Referrals to Psychiatric Assessment & Planning Unit (PAPU) via the RMH Emergency Department only
