Stoma care nursing is a specialised area within nursing practice providing direct and supportive care to patients in the hospital, or on an outpatient basis. The stomal therapy nurse has authority, responsibility, and accountability for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of ostomy care for patients.

The Stomal Therapy Nurse specialises in the care of clients who have a stoma.  Help is available for care, support, education and rehabilitation for those who are anticipating surgery and to people who have undergone surgery and have been discharged home.
