Perinatal Mental Health refers to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of women and their infants during pregnancy and early infancy.
Many women will experience emotional
distress and difficulties adjusting to the
pregnancy which may affect how they look after themselves and their baby.
Approximately one in seven women will develop depression and or anxiety after they have their baby and for many of these women the problems can begin while they are pregnant. Depression can negatively affect the health of women, their babies, and their families.
Early identification is important along with comprehensive assessment so as to plan the best strategy, in partnership with primary care, to support women and their families. Interventions such as information, education, psychological interventions and linkage to community resources are very effective.
