Coordinate disease control initiatives - including surveillance, monitoring and managing disease outbreaks, epidemiological investigations and coordination of, and support for, immunisation programs.
Developing, coordinating and support population-focused health promotion interventions for priority health issues of state and local significance - in particular chronic disease risk factor prevention, injury and skin cancer prevention, and mental health promotion.
Monitoring and enforcing relevant public health legislation and/or policies - food safety and standards, regulated drugs and poisons, environmental toxicology and tobacco control.
Undertaking health surveillance initiatives - the collation, analysis, monitoring and dissemination of information on health status and risk factor trends.
Providing specialist public health advice and services to a range of other government agencies, local government and the community including leading, participating in, or advising on health risk and health impact assessments.
.. Public health units focus on protecting health; preventing disease, illness and injury; and promoting health and wellbeing at a population or whole of community level. This is distinct from the role of the rest of the health system which is primarily focused on providing healthcare services to individuals and families.
