If there are no concerns with your pregnancy, your GP can provide your antenatal care from their surgery. This is known as Shared Care, and it operates in conjunction with the Centenary Hospital for Women & Children Antenatal Clinic. This option is valuable if your GP will be the main health care provider for you and your family once your baby is born.
During the term of your pregnancy your GP will be able to get to know you and your family. The antenatal visits will be shared between your GP and the Centenary Hospital for Women & Children Antenatal Clinic.
If you choose Shared Care you will need to call the Antenatal Clinic to make a pre-admission appointment.
Shared Care will see your baby being born at the Centenary Hospital for Women & Children birthing suite, however if any complications arise during your pregnancy your GP will refer you to a Hospital Obstetrician, for specialist advice.

Additional Information:
The Canberra Midwifery Program (CMP) operates from the Birth Centre at Centenary Hospital for Women & Children, and is available for women who:
- Prefer to birth in a relaxed, home-like and less medicalised environment,
- Are planning to have a natural birth, including managing pain by non pharmacological methods,
- Are healthy and have few medical risk factors, and
- Prefer a low intervention natural birth approach to maternity care.
During labour, your midwife will provide one-to-one care for you in the Birth Centre. Midwives work closely with the medical team and with other midwives within the unit to ensure that you and your baby receive the highest standard of care.
For women wishing to birth in the Birth Centre, it is highly recommended that you book in as soon as you confirm that you are pregnant. The program is very popular and has a waiting list for most months so it is essential that you book a place as early as possible if this is your preferred birthing option.
Bookings or enquiries can be made by contacting the Birth Centre on (02) 6244 3145.

The CatCH Program works with women to create an environment that fosters the natural process of childbirth, and one that is responsive to the needs of women and their babies.
The CatCH Program provides continuity of care for women including those who may have an obstetric/medical complication. CatCH women will birth in the Centenary Hospital for Women & Children birthing suite and their care will be provided by a 'known' midwife which will include:
- Pregnancy care visits from initial booking at 12 – 16 weeks and throughout pregnancy.
- Labour and birth bare
- Postnatal care both in hospital and at home.
Pregnancy care with your allocated midwife may include a home visit but most of your antenatal care will be provided at the hospital clinic or at one of our community clinics.
