The Phillip Health Centre on the Corner of Keltie and Corinna Streets in Woden, provides a Primary Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) at the back of building, opposite Lovett (MLC) Tower.
Primary NSPs such as this provide a range of sterile injecting equipment, including safe and appropriate disposal of used equipment. NSPs provides specialised injecting equipment such as pill filters and butterflies as well as information, advice on harm minimization and education on HIV, Hep C and other blood borne viruses.
NSPs undertakes primary health care (vein and health checks and first aid treatment) and crisis counselling with active referrals to medical, legal, housing and social welfare agencies and provides follow up support services.
Primary NSPs are open during week days 9.00am to 5.00pm, with a break over the lunch period. In general Primary NSPs are closed during public holidays and weekends. Secondary Needle and Syringe Programs (NSP's) distribute clean injecting equipment normally between 4 and 8 packs, distribute safe sex items such as condoms and provide information and resources on harm minimisation and other health related issues.
Secondary NSP's are in various locations such as health centres, youth centres and some community organisations. The secondary NSP's locations include:
- AIDS Action and SWOP (Westlund House, Acton),
- The Junction Youth Health Services (Cnr Petrie St, Canberra City),
- Alcohol & Drug Program (City Health Centre, Moore Street, Canberra City),
- Belconnen Health Centre (Cnr Swanson St & Benjamin Way, Belconnen),
- Phillip Health Centre (Cnr Keltie & Corinna Streets, Phillip),
- Tuggeranong Health Centre (Cnr Anketel & Pitman Streets, Greenway) and
- Narrabundah Health Centre (Boolimba Crescent, Narrabundah).
