The Diversion Service provides programs aimed at diverting people arrested and/or charged with drug or alcohol related offences out of the judicial system and into the health system.
The Early Intervention Pilot Program (EIPP) is a national initiative run in conjunction with AFP, aimed to provide AOD education (and referral and treatment) to young people under 18 years caught on underage drinking offences.
Police Early Diversion (PED) operated in partnership with the AFP and provides an alternative to Court for clients caught with non-trafficable amounts of cannabis or other illicit drugs.
Court Alcohol and Drug Assessment Service (CADAS) is a scheme in use in the Magistrate, Children's and Supreme Courts to engaged clients in treatment plans during court proceedings and as part of their Orders on sentence. Clients are case managed and supported with referral to treatment services facilitated.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officers work to support Indigenous clients across Alcohol and Drug Services. This role provides case management and support, and assists clients with referral and advocacy accessing other AOD sector services, mental health and Indigenous services.
The Officer also provides support and education to other services to assist them to provide appropriate care to indigenous clients.

Additional Information: People wanting to start on opioid treatment are assessed to determine suitability for treatment. This involves taking a history and conducting a physical examination. Fees apply to clients receiving opioid maintenance treatment however exemptions may be provided to: pregnant women; women and their partners with children under the age of two years; people identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; clients under the age of 18 years; people with HIV and their opioid using partners; hepatitis B carriers and their opioid using partners; people released from correctional institutions in the past three months; and clients of a diversion program from the criminal justice system. Dosing is located at Building 7, Level 2 of the Canberra Hospital and the opening hours are as listed, however please note the Medical Service is open 8:30am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday. Please contact the program administrator for further information.

Additional Information: Located at building 7, Level 2 at the Canberra Hospital, the Consultation Liaison Service provides assessment, support and referral for clients who have been admitted to the Canberra Hospital who also have an alcohol and/or drug issue. The service works in coordination with doctors, nurses and staff to assist the client on their road to recovery. This service assists with health promotion and harm minimisation, withdrawal management, referral for ongoing care after discharge and co-morbidity information.

Canberra Hospital's Alcohol and Drug Service provides supervised withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs that includes education, support and medication.
Withdrawal from alcohol and some other drugs often requires medication to avoid the potential harms associated with ceasing alcohol or other drug use.
Supervised withdrawal can include:
– educational groups relating to alcohol and other drug use;
– liaison with self-help groups;
– liaison and follow-up with other specialist services; and
– counselling (also offered as part of follow up care).
All people seeking a supervised withdrawal are placed on a priority list for residential and out-patient withdrawal services. Family members and friends are provided with alcohol and drug information and offered referral.
Specialist Medical Services include:
– Comprehensive client drug and alcohol management
– Induction and ongoing care for clients with complex needs who are prescribed Opiate Replacement Therapy (Pharmacotherapy)
– Medicated Withdrawal (Inpatient and Outpatient).
– Referral for other medical services as appropriate
– Liaison and provision of medical advice and care to inpatients, and advice to GP's or health care practitioners.
– Education to other health care professionals and the general public.

Additional Information: The Co-morbidity Service located at building 7, Level 2 of the Canberra Hospital is a part of the Consultation and Liaison team. It provides a variety of services to clients who have a mental health condition and who also have an alcohol and/or drug issue. This service offers health promotion and harm minimisation, mental health support clinic every second Friday as well as support, assessment and referral. Clients can be self-referred or referred via the Opioid Treatment Service, a Staff Specialist or the Consultation Liaison Service.
