Who can we help
The Carer Centre provides a clearly and readily accessible regional focal point for carers providing information and support about the full range of services and other resources available to those in a caring role in the Loddon Mallee region.
Carers come from all backgrounds, and range from the very young to the elderly. Carers give their time and energy to those for whom they care. But looking after someone can be exhausting and seem never ending. Some carers have support, but many feel very much alone.
Carer Support Services was established as part of the Victorian Carer Initiatives and the Commonwealth National Respite for Carers Strategy in the Loddon Mallee region. This team provides a 'first contact' information point for carers, to assist and support them in accessing services including respite care.
Commonwealth Carer Respite Centres work with carers to plan sensible approaches to respite and other support needs and also arrange 24 hour emergency respite care.
Our Regional Residential Respite Carer Support Worker and Residential Respite Carer Support Worker are all based in the Bendigo Office, and contactable on the above number.
Carer Support Services provides a 'first contact' information point for carers, to assist and support them in accessing services including respite care. The service:
-- Coordinates access to respite care services
-- Develops and maintains a residential respite booking service
-- Provides practical and emotional support to carers
-- Has 24-hour emergency access

The Pastoral Care team members are sensitive to and respectful of different faith traditions, beliefs and cultural needs. Support is also offered to those who have no allegiance to a particular faith or religious belief. Referrals can be made by staff or family in times of distress, bereavement, celebration and renewed hoped by contacting chaplains directly, or sending a request through the Pastoral Care Office.
Denominational Chaplains:
Patients, families and staff can arrange a pastoral care visit directly. Denominational chaplains may also be contacted after hours in an emergency. For those who nominate a specific faith on their records, a denominational chaplain may visit you during your time at Bendigo Health.
Honorary Chaplains:
Honorary chaplains offer visitation to all patients, regardless of faith background, and are assigned to visit specific wards or facilities on a weekly basis.
Service offered:
Chaplains seek to create an environment of friendship in which each person is valued and where hope and meaning are fostered in an holistic healing context. The chaplain's role is to listen to your story, respect your beliefs, draw on your sources of strength, courage and hope. Chaplains enable and facilitate each person to discover and use their own spiritual resources and strengths.

Additional Information:
Stoma care nursing is a specialised area within nursing practice providing direct and supportive care to patients in the hospital, or on an outpatient basis.
The stomal therapy nurse has authority, responsibility, and accountability for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of ostomy care for patients.
Internationally, it is recognised that individuals who are undergoing surgery which requires the fashioning of a stoma have specific and specialised needs and these individuals have a right to specialised care under the direction of an independent stomal therapist. In caring for the individual with a stoma the stomal therapy nurse provides information and clarifies information already given to the patient and his family pre-operatively. Under the guidance and expertise of the stomal therapist, an assessment is made of the patient's individual needs and in consultation with the patient a choice of appliance is made. Ongoing reviews of the patient's progress are made until such time as the patient is sufficiently rehabilitated and competent in resuming a normal lifestyle
Initial Contact
Clients are generally referred by the surgeon performing the operation. Self referral is ok.

The Child and Adolescent Unit (Children's Ward) is a 14 bed unit cares for children from early infancy through to adolescence. The Unit provides children with family-centred, personalised, high quality multi-discipline care and is staffed by specialist paediatricians and nursing staff. The unit also maintains close links with the community.
With facilities for a parent or guardian to stay overnight, parents are encouraged to be involved in their child's care. The unit has tea and coffee facilities, parents' en-suite, retreat and a light breakfast is provided for parents that have stayed overnight.
The unit holds a preparation program for children booked in for elective surgery and their parents or guardians, called 'Happy Hour' every Sunday at 2pm. The hour-long program includes a video, play session, tour of the unit and a visit to the operating theatre complex. This valuable preparation for any child having an operation is provided free of charge.
Our unit has a warm and friendly environment featuring both inside play areas, XBox and a large variety of videos/dvds.
The unit also provides the Family Choice Program in liaison with the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. A Home Care Nurse from the Child and Adolescent Unit coordinates the training of carers to provide support and respite for families with a child with complex medical needs in their home.

With the relay service people can ring anyone, even if the other person does not have a TTY. And for those who speak, they can speak to the person and read their reply! Please phone the above numbers for more information.
Telephones
There are a number of better phones and way of using a phone if you are hard of hearing wether you have a hearing aid or not.
Smoke Alarms for the deaf
These use a flashing strobe light, a shaker that goes under the pillow and a bell that is easier to hear than a regular smoke alarm.
Can't hear the doorbell?
There are alternatives to a regular door bell and other alerting devices. A pocket sized vibrating pager is available as well as flashing lights and portable loud bells.
Difficulty hearing the TV or radio?
There are ways of being able to hear the TV and radio easier whether or not you have hearing aids.
Home Visits
Depending on your circumstances deaf Access can visit you at home and demonstrate the technology and devices mentioned regardless of where you live in the Loddon Mallee region.
Costs
There is some funding available. TTY's are rented just like a standard rental phone that you may be renting now.

The Referral Centre provides a single point of entry for referrers and clients. We do this by providing a service solely dedicated to directing referrals to the most appropriate service. Our Clinician and Intake Clerks work together to ensure referrals contain adequate information and are of an acceptable standard to allow Bendigo Health triage teams to decide upon patient priority and eligibility. Our referrals are registered on a dedicated database which enables us to accurately track where a referral has come from and which service it has been directed to.

• Support the Cultural Diversity Advisory Committee in the development, implementation and monitoring of the Bendigo Health Cultural Responsiveness Plan
• Lead the review or development of policies/guidelines associated with diversity
• Arrange or provide information/ in-services/ education for staff and volunteers as required
• Support interpreter and translator service requests and data collection and reporting.
Effective communication with consumers helps with the delivery of quality health services to meet individual needs. It is a medical and legal requirement that information provided to consumers is fully understood.
An accredited interpreter should be used to help with communication and understanding. The use of family and friends to interpret is not acceptable unless no other means is available.
Staff should be aware that:
a) They are responsible for informing consumers that an accredited interpreter will be arranged at all critical points in the care path (at no charge to the consumer)
b) Consumers may be proficient in functional English but not in the more complex language that is used in the healthcare setting
c) The stress of illness and having to deal with the healthcare environment may result in the loss of English proficiency
d) The gradual loss of the ability to both understand and communicate in English may occur during the aging process of a person from a diverse language background
e) Consumers who have a hearing impairment may require Auslan interpreting
Follow the languages services procedure (using the link above) to identify if an interpreter is required or request an interpreter or translation service.
