The Midwifery Unit at the Mildura Base Hospital demonstrates a leading and innovative approach to caring for women and their family during their pregnancy, childbirth and the immediate post-natal period.
The Midwifery Unit of the Mildura Base Hospital offers a range of services all focussing on the needs of pregnant women and their families and assists them to prepare for the arrival of their baby.
The Mildura Base Hospital's Maternity Services Team compromises of qualified and experienced doctors, midwives, nurses and support staff committed to the provision of high standard of care women expect at Mildura Base Hospital.
Birth-rate: Our birth rate is nearing 1000/year and steadily increasing.

Accreditation: The midwifery unit is accredited as Baby Friendly. A Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) is an international project that aims to give every baby the best start in life by creating a health care environment where breastfeeding is the norm and practices known to promote the health and well-being of all babies and their mothers are followed.
The Baby Friendly Health Initiative's Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding are the global standard by which health services are assessed and accredited.
A 'Baby Friendly' health service is one where the mothers' informed choice of feeding is supported, respected and encouraged.

What is Post Acute Care
Post Acute Care is managed short-term care, funded by the Victorian State Government to assist patients recuperate following an acute hospital admission and to assist with their independence or additional care where required.
The Post Acute Program provides individually tailored packages of care to patients following discharge from hospital.
Post Acute Care is a time limited short term intervention designed to assist patients recover, and provides additional services as required. PAC acts to top up the current service system, not substitute existing services

Services offered include:

The RIR program is a free service that has been developed to provide alternative options for transfer of residents to the Emergency Department, if safe and supported care can be provided in the Residential Aged Care Facility. The Mildura Base Hospital's Community Rehabilitation Centre opened on the 1st of December, 2000. It was established within the existing Allied Health out-patient department. New therapy programs were added to those already established to enable rehabilitation patients to participate in a variety of individually tailored sessions, and to be able to attend for the length of time, and the frequency required, to promote optimal recovery.
The emphasis has moved to a case managed, goal orientated, multidisciplinary program.
A Community Rehabilitation Centre provides a multidisciplinary rehabilitation service on an outpatient basis. The focus is on involving the clients in an active rehabilitation program with a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team developing care plans and setting realistic goals.
Multidisciplinary case conferences are held for clients with complex needs.

Antenatal Booking-in
The Antenatal Booking-in is a process of giving details to the hospital regarding the woman's pregnancy and any previous and current medical conditions, so that the midwives are aware of the woman's needs when she presents for the birth of her baby.
Eligible: All women who plan to give birth at the Mildura Base Hospital are asked to book-in when approximately 20 weeks pregnant.
Women living in the Robinvale region can make a booking-in appointment with the midwife at the Robinvale Health Centre.
Waiting time: The waiting time for a booking-in appointment is usually 4 weeks so please ensure this appointment is made as early as possible. We ask that women book-in at approximately 20 weeks.
Interpreting Services: Please let us know when making your appointment if an interpreter is required.

Antenatal Education (Preparation for childbirth)
Mildura Base Hospital is committed to running a comprehensive childbirth and parenting preparation classes.
Eligible: All women who plan to give birth at the Mildura Base Hospital and are interested in attending. Most women bring a support person with them to the class - usually their partner, and often another support person as well, such as their mother, sister or friend.
Waiting time: The classes are run continually throughout the year.
Hours: By appointment only.
Childbirth Preparation Classes are run in sets of 6 week groups. These are held twice a week on a Wednesday and Thursday evening. Women attend either the Wednesday group or the Thursday group (not both, as the content is the same).

Antenatal Services for Women with Special Needs
The service provides pregnancy, birthing and parenting education that is relevant to women with special needs, such as pregnant women 20 years or younger, Aboriginal women, and women from a non-English speaking background.

The Community Midwife program provides antenatal support and education, midwifery support and assessment during labour, and the promotion of early discharge with post-natal care in the home environment.
The midwife will visit women in their own environment several times during their pregnancy to book them into hospital, answer questions, prepare for the birth of the baby as well as bringing the baby home.
An assessment of early labour can be done in the home, with advice on when to come to hospital.
Women in the program will be discharged to home within 24 hours after the baby is born, where they will be followed up at home by the community midwife (rather than the Domiciliary Midwife), who will provide support with your transition into parenthood.
Women who require an advanced level of obstetric or paediatric care for themselves or their baby may not be accepted.
Referral: Referrals are accepted from the woman's General Practitioner or Obstetrician.

The Haemodialysis Unit of the Mildura Base hospital opened as a satellite unit of the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
This affiliation assures that patients have strong links to the Tertiary Referring Hospital, and provides Mildura staff with the ability to access contemporary knowledge and equipment.
There are six client chairs, and the unit functions from 7:30am to 9:00pm, Monday to Saturday inclusive. All unit staff are Registered Nurses Div 1, who have completed training in the care of dialysis patients.
A holiday service is offered, dependant upon availability, and bookings can be made by contacting unit staff.
