The Men's Referral Service (MRS) is the Victorian gateway agency for men who are making their first moves towards taking responsibility for their violent or abusive behaviour towards their family and don't know how or where to go for further assistance. As the central point of contact, MRS provides anonymous and confidential telephone counselling, information and referrals to men to assist them to take further action to stop their violent and abusive behaviour. The safety of the caller, their partner and family, is always checked by the service. Women who call the service are affirmed in their decision to seek help, reassured that they are not responsible for the violence that they have experienced, and are given information about sources of support for themselves. Women callers are also given information about local services for their male partner and it is suggested that their partner call the service themselves. Importantly: MRS only refers to those male behaviour change programs adhering to state-wide minimum standards developed by No To Violence and endorsed by the Victorian Department of Human Services. MRS does not refer to anger management groups, as it does not consider that these are appropriate interventions for men who are using violence towards family members.
