This service offers assessment and treatment to maximise patients' capacity for optimal engagement in meaningful occupations and activities of daily living. The following areas may be assessed: physical, sensory, psycho-social, neuro-behavioural/cognitive, environmental, vocational, driving.
A management plan is developed for each individual, and may include:
•Specific treatment for assessed deficits
•Home assessment and liaison regarding home modifications and other discharge
planning requirements
•Involvement of relevant significant others in OT sessions
•Information on community resources and access
•Management techniques and education about the nature of the disease or deficit
•Practical advice on equipment, and strategies to reduce the burden of care
There is an occupational therapy service in most inpatient areas of the health service, except for women's health. Outpatient services are provided to the Community Rehabilitation Centre and paediatric patients at Sunshine Hospital, and to Hand Clinic patients only at Western Hospital. No other outpatient services are offered.
