The Registrar Review Clinic provides semi urgent review of patients by an Orthopaedic Registrar.
Patients can be referred by a medical officer who has spoken with the Registrar who has agreed to see them in clinic.
To refer a patient please call the Canberra Hospital switch on 6244 2222 and ask for the Orthopaedic Registrar to be paged. Once the patient has been accepted to the clinic, a written referral is required. Once the referral is received a nurse will contact the patient and schedule an appointment.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Unit (TORU) was established in 1999, and is located within the Division of Surgery. TORU undertakes a range of clinical and laboratory studies aimed at advancing the body of knowledge and improving the clinical treatment of musculoskeletal diseases.
TORU's clinical research incorporates aspects of arthroplasty, trauma and fractures, medical imaging and joint kinematics.
TORU's collaborative laboratory facilities at Canberra Hospital and John Curtin School of Medical Research at ANU facilitate TORU's studies on osteoimmunology and molecular medicine.
TORU's combined clinical and laboratory based research continues to make a significant contribution to advances in translational medicine; bridging medical science and clinical practice.

The Ortho-Geriatric Medicine Service is routinely provided to orthopaedic inpatients at the Canberra Hospital, who are over the age of 65 years.
The Ortho-Geriatric Medicine Service assesses patients with an aim to provide advice regarding management of medical conditions, anti-osteoporosis treatment, falls prevention and optimise medication management following surgery.
The service is generally provided between Monday and Friday 8:30am-5.00pm (excluding public holidays), although service is available outside of these hours when required.

Fracture Clinics are for the review and management of newly acquired fractures.
The waiting list for fracture clinic appointments is actively managed to ensure patients are treated equitably within clinically appropriate timeframes and with priority given to patients with an urgent clinical need.
Internal referrals are accepted via Emergency Department presentations, inpatients and day patients.
External referrals will need to be mailed or faxed to the Fracture Clinic at:

Orthopaedic Outpatient Services operates a large number of consultative, post operative and pre-admission clinics. Clients are seen by an orthopaedic surgeon, a nurse or member of allied health. Pre and postoperative clients are booked into this clinic.
Orthopaedic Outpatient Clinics provide:
– Monthly pre-operative hip and knee replacement patient education sessions;
(Held on the last Wednesday of the month 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm)
– Six week post hip and knee replacement physiotherapy review;
– Bi-weekly lower limb exercise class
(For patient's pre and post-operative hip and knee surgery and non-operative lower limb conditions which would benefit from supervised exercise).

Orthopaedic Services have a dedicated ward with specialist nursing and allied health professionals who support our orthopaedic surgeons, ensuring you will receive optimum care and treatment during your stay at the Canberra Hospital.
Ward 5A is an orthopaedic ward which caters for both elective and emergency orthopaedic procedures. Ward 5B is a combined orthopaedic, plastic and oral and maxillofacial unit, both units are 30 bed capacity. Every room has en-suite facilities. Our nursing team is supported by a variety of specialist's whose ultimate aim is to provide your care in a comfortable, clean and friendly environment.
Visiting times:
10:00am – 2:00pm 7 days a week
3:00pm – 8:00pm 7 days a week
The hospital has a discharge team who work closely with the ward staff and other therapists. The aim is to ensure your return home is safe and organised.
