Personal story: rheumatoid arthritis

Being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis can be both emotionally and practically challenging. Listening to others who have experienced similar situations is often re-assuring and can be helpful for you, your loved ones or when preparing questions for your doctor or a specialist.

The male patient, aged 70 was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica in 2000 and had been taking various doses of oral steroids for two years. A swollen hand prompted a visit to a rheumatologist in December 2003, where rheumatoid arthritis was diagnosed. He was given a steroid injection at the time, and an additional injection since.
