CRUfAD – Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression

The Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression (CRUfAD) is a joint research facility of St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and the University of New South Wales. They conduct research, educate and treat individuals and patients about how to recover from anxiety and depressive disorders.

Role

The unit conducts research to drive online internet Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (iCBT) services to prevent, upskill, educate and treat individuals, patients and clinicians. For schools, they educate teachers and students about how to avoid illness and to optimise their physical and mental health. CRUfAD train and up skill clinicians about how to treat and cure anxiety and depression.

Mission

CRUfAD’s aim is to reduce the burden of anxiety and depression through prevention, professional education, self-help education and treatment.

    • Unguided courses: individuals are able to work through the courses unsupervised.
    • Clinician resources and services.
    • Information about common mental disorders.
    • Prevention programs for schools.
    • Services and resources for clinicians.

    • Virtual Clinic – established to expand the current evidence base through applied research.

    Depression

Depression is a mood state that is characterised by significantly lowered mood and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities that are normally enjoyable. Such depressed mood is a common and normal experience in the population. However, a major depressive episode can be distinguished from this `normal’ depression by its severity, persistence, duration, and the presence of characteristic symptoms (e.g., sleep disturbances).

Social phobia, the fear of being judged negatively, is often not recognised because patients do not like to talk about their fears. It is also not recognized because clinicians either confuse it with shyness, or judge the secondary depression or substance dependence to be the primary disorder.
