New medicines for diabetes, growth hormone deficiency and advanced soft tissue sarcoma (a type of cancer) have been approved for listing on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).
Announced on 27 February 2014, Minister for Health Peter Dutton said the PBS subsidies would make the medicines more affordable for Australians who needed them.
Patients with diabetes who use a combination of two medicines will benefit from the new listing of combined medicines.

A new website has been launched by the Alzheimer’s Australia Dementia Research Foundation. It aims to showcase dementia research currently being conducted in Australia.
The launch of the website coincides with the announcement of 29 research grants to young scientists, who will share in $2.5 million to conduct dementia research.

More Australians received a life-saving kidney in 2013 than ever before.
Last year, 1,222 Australians received an organ transplant due to the generosity of 391 deceased donors and their families.
Kidney transplants from deceased donors reached a new record in 2013, with a total of 645 Australians receiving the gift of life.

New legislation introduced on 1 January 2014 by the NSW government aims to help protect children in child care centres from preventable disease.
As of January 1, a child cannot be enrolled at a child care facility unless the parent or guardian provides an official immunisation record proving the child is fully immunised or an approved exemption is provided.
