Know Pathology Know Healthcare

Know Pathology Know Healthcare is a not-for-profit initiative to increase understanding and recognition of the vital role that pathology services play in healthcare.

70% of medical decisions rely on pathology results. 100% of cancers are diagnosed by pathology tests. Countless medical conditions are prevented, diagnosed and managed using pathology. Australians have access to one of the highest quality pathology services in the world.

Despite this, many Australians don’t have the opportunity to appreciate how doctors use their results. Pathology testing occurs behind closed laboratory doors for safety reasons and to ensure patient confidentiality. Results go to requesting doctors, not patients directly. Often these are not fully explained to patients due to time restrictions and scientific complexity.

Know Pathology Know Healthcare explains the value of pathology through personal stories of how test results can save lives or give someone a second chance.

They partner with Lab Tests Online, a digital database about pathology tests. This plain-English resource is written by Australian Pathologists with the public in mind. It is reliable, easy to understand and regularly updated.

Know Pathology Know Healthcare also work with advocacy groups such as Cancer Council Australia, Diabetes Australia and Kidney Health Australia. More than 35 groups are official supporters of Know Pathology Know Healthcare.
