The Florey Institute study:
- mental illnesses including schizophrenia, bipolar and depression
- Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, motor neuron and Alzheimer’s diseases
- multiple sclerosis
- cardiovascular disease
- traumatic brain injury.
Through medical research, the Florey Institute are searching for answers to some of the most serious illnesses affecting the brain. One in five Australians will be affected by a brain disorder and the goal is to limit the impact of those illnesses – or to prevent them occurring.
The Florey Institute's 550 medical researchers are based in Heidelberg, next to Austin Health and in Parkville, next to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. This allows them to work with patients, taking research from the lab to people who need to become well.
Developing drug therapies, improving rehabilitation, conducting basic research under the microscope – it all adds up to an approach to neuroscience that has attracted senior scientists from all over the world to Melbourne.
