Education, schools and childcare – Victoria

Updated on 15 December 2021, at 15:15 AET

Victoria’s COVIDSafe settings

Schools, childcare centres and early childhood education are open to all ages.

If you're fully vaccinated, you can attend adult education facilities, such as university and TAFE. If you're not fully vaccinated, you're not allowed to enter unless it can't be taught online.

Response to a COVID-19 case in schools

Any student or staff member who has symptoms of COVID-19 will be asked to go home, get a PCR test and self-isolate until they get a result. Students will be isolated at school until a parent or carer can collect them.

Confirmed case of COVID-19

If students or staff are identified as education contacts of a confirmed case, they must get a PCR test and isolate at home until they receive a negative result.

Families and households of identified education contacts don’t need to isolate.

Education contacts can return to school once they receive a negative PCR test result. This result must be provided to the school.

Mandatory face masks

Masks must be worn indoors at school by staff, visitors and students in Grade 3 to 6.

Students with a physical or mental disability don't need to wear a face mask where their disability means it wouldn't be suitable.

For more information on face mask restrictions and exemptions, see ‘Face masks — Victoria’ in the Restriction Checker.

Record keeping for contact tracing

To support contact tracing, all venues must ask visitors and staff who are on the premises to check in using the free Service Victoria QR Code app. For details, visit coronavirus.vic.gov.au/checking-in-qr-codes.

For more information on Victoria's settings, visit coronavirus.vic.gov.au or call the Victorian Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398. International, interstate and mobile callers can phone (+613) 9096 9000.
