The Specialist Mental Health Services for Older People (Blacktown) provides multidisciplinary assessment, consultation, intervention, and care coordination services for older people with psychiatric syndromes and /or dementia with highly challenging behaviours. The aim of the service is to optimise the well-being and functional abilities of older people with serious mental health issues. This is a recovery focused sub-acute specialist service operating within the community setting within the Blacktown / Mt Druitt LGA. Consumers are generally 65 years or older, or 55 years and older if they are from an Aboriginal background. Younger people with complex ageing related issues are also considered. Longstanding clients of general adult mental health services usually continue to receive services from them after the age of 65. However, their care may be transferred to SMHSOP if they have specific ageing related needs and consent to the transfer.
