Additional Information:
The Pap smear is used to check changes in the cervix (the neck of the womb) at the top of the vagina. It is a screening tool to find early warning signs that cancer might develop in the future.
The Pap smear is a simple procedure. Cells are collected from the cervix and placed (smeared) onto a slide. The slide is sent to a laboratory where the cells are tested for anything unusual. If abnormal changes are found at screening, further tests will be done to see if treatment is needed.
The Pap smear is not for diagnosing cancer, but rather, for finding early changes which might become cancer.
A Pap smear only takes a few minutes. No drugs or anaesthetics are required and it can be done by a general practitioner, nurse or women's health worker.
The Pap smear does not check for other problems in the reproductive system including ovarian cancer. It is not a check for sexually transmitted infections. Women who are worried that they may have a sexually transmitted infection should talk to their general practitioner about the tests and treatments available.
Both Dr Lalani and CHN Cath McDonald are Pap Smear Providers

Additional Information:
Shared care midwifery means that some women will have the option to share some of their pregnancy visits between their doctor and midwives at their birthing hospital with our local midwives at the hospital who are passionate about retaining some midwifery services in the community to reduce the burden of travel for mothers with small children. There is an option for women to access antenatal care through the Edenhope Medical Clinic as a point of entry to maternity care services when pregnant. It is a shared care option where women and their partners can see a midwife for eight of their ten antenatal visits during the course of their pregnancies. The other two visits will be shared with their chosen GP hence the term shared care.
We have built up a relationship with the Wimmera Health Group so that mothers can have routine check-ups in Edenhope through our midwifery team with all results entered into the BOS electronic system so that a complete record is available to all of the care providers when you are visiting you doctor or midwife. This will have the benefit of reducing the amount of travel that is required by the mother.
The added bonus of the Shared Care Midwifery model is that the midwives will be able to provide the additional time to answer any of your questions or concerns. The midwives also are able to book you in through Edenhope to have your baby at the Wimmera Health Group.
We are currently working with the Western District Health Service in Hamilton to establish a similar program for the mothers in our community who prefer to birth in Hamilton.
To establish if shared midwifery is right for you first discuss this with your Doctor.
Appointments are available Mondays and can be made through the Edenhope Medical Clinic by phoning 03 5585 9888.

Urgent Care Centre
The Accident and Emergency department of the Edenhope & District Memorial Hospital is open 24 hours a day—7 days per week.
It can be accessed through the front door until 9.00pm. After 9.00pm the Hospital is locked.
Entry after 9.00pm is by an emergency buzzer at the front door.
The Accident and Emergency Department has trained Nurses available and a doctor on call, 24 hours a day.
During Business hours Monday—Friday the Edenhope Hospital Medical Clinic at the hospital on Lake St or Edenhope Medical Clinic in Elizabeth Street is accessible for non-emergency consultations.
All levels of emergency care are given in the department. Once initial care and stabilisation has been attended then decisions are made as to the most appropriate place for patients to receive ongoing care. Transfers to other specialised hospitals are then arranged.
Will I have to wait long for treatment?
No. Waiting times at our hospital are substantially less than at city hospitals.
X-rays are conducted in the Radiology room. These can be by appointment only with our visiting radiographer, who comes from Hamilton three times weekly.
We have some trained staff who may be able to attend to some emergency X-rays.
A vast range of conditions are treated in our department—from small grazes and burns to major motor vehicle accidents or sore throats through to pneumonia.
All patients are assessed on arrival, and priority and urgency of care needs are identified.
